I'm a Professor at
the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, who's research focus is quantum optics, with emphasis on quantum foundations, quantum imaging and quantum information. If you are new to quantum physics, I suggest you check out this introductory text. I'm also engaged in interdisciplinary creative projects and promoting inclusion and diversity in science.
Interdisciplinary Projects
The Fabric of Space-Time
What is your preferred fabric of space-time? In reference to the commodification of scientific projects, Kayla Lewis and I pose as personal stylists, connecting each participant to fabrics and designs that represent the main features of three quantum space-time hypotheses competing today for funding and recognition.
Decoherence 1.0
This installation explores a continual feedback between light and sound, physics and art, mediated by the public. It reminds us of the dynamical entanglement of art, science and society, and of our active role in this dance. With Irradiation Reloaded and Mehul Malik.
Yes or No?
Maybe yes and no? This survey is designed to capture the pauses and intonations that reveal the hidden ambiguities behind seemingly binary answers to all sorts of questions we pose to the participant. With Kayla Lewis.
Quantum Photography
The famous image from our quantum imaging method was invited to be part of the ArBio Brasil exhibit of scientific art. With Tori Borish, Radek Lapkiewicz, Sven Ramelow, Garett Cole and Anton Zeilinger.
Somnium
Traditionally, storytelling is a means by which mothers keep their cultures alive, teach their children to navigate the dangers of the world, and foment imagination. Witch-hunting was and is a way of shutting up women and canceling their histories. Here is a witch-hunt at the heart of the history of physics. Illustrations by Jacques Pienaar.
Duda's lab book
Duda guides children through fun and enlightening science experiments in their kitchen. Thank you to all those who contributed to our crowdfunding campaign! Illustrations by Anne Karollayne Gomes de Lima. Diagramming by Rafaela Brenda de Souza Alves. Text by the Little Seeds of Science team.
Inclusion and Diversity in Science
Little Seeds of Science
A project initiated with Laura Corredor Bohórquez at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, aimed at encouraging and inspiring young girls to remain curious and enjoy learning science. Girls learn science through simple experiments and then teach the boys.
Gender Work Group
In 2020 I became a member of the work group of the Brazilian Society of Physics devoted to gender equity in the Brazilian physics community.
Madalenas
Feminist collective initiated together with Nadja Kolb Bernardes with actions aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion amoung physicists studying and working in Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Medal Mietta Santiago
In 2019 I received the Medal Mietta Santiago, awarded by the Brazilian National Congress to people who's initiatives have impacted women's rights in Brazil.
Women do Science
I wrote the forward to this beautiful book describing the stories of Brazilian women working in a range of scientific fields.
